On Tanzania Safari at Udzungwa Forest Tented Camp

This unique destination on the edge of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park is within easy walking distance of the main Park Headquarters. Udzungwa Forest Tented Camp is a great base for a Tanzania safari and trips into the National Park.

Top activities on a Tanzania safari at Udzungwa include trails, hikes and treks on foot within the park, but there are a number of other opportunities to canoe and cycle, visit areas of local interest and set off on game drives in Mikumi National Park.

The eco-friendly Udzungwa Forest Tented Camp has wonderful views of the forest canopy and is well situated close to the park entrance. Primates including the elegant Black and White Colobus Monkey and the endemic Iringa Red Colobus are regularly seen from the camp.

The Udzungwa Mountains are a primate hotspot with five Tanzanian endemics including the newly discovered Highland Mangeby (found in Ndundulu Forest), the Sanje Crested Mangeby, the Matundu Dwarf Galago and the Mountain Dwarf Galago. Other primates present include the Vervet Monkey, Sykes Monkey, Yellow Baboon, Grant's Galago, Small-eared Galago, and greater Galago.

The Udzungwa Mountains National Park in Tanzania is among the top ten areas for bird conservation in Africa (IBA) with over 250 bird species. The Udzungwa Mountains are also home to several Tanzanian endemic birds including Rufous Winged Sunbird and the Udzungwa Partridge. The forest edge is popular with Silvery Cheeked, Crowned and Trumpeter Hornbills.

Mammal species to be found in the Udzungwa Mountains include 4 of the Big Five with Elephant, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard as well as Hyena, Hippo, Bushbuck, Sable, Greater Kudu, Bush Duiker, Harvey's Red Duiker, Palm Civets, Miombo Genets, Sun Squirrels, Climbing Mice, Spiny Mice, Pouched Rats, Elephants Shrews and shrews.

Other mammal species are headed by the newly rediscovered Lowe's Servaline Genet, which was photographed for the first time in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. It was last seen some 70 years ago and evidence was limited to a single skin.
